We’re now on the other side of this year’s Summer Game Fest, the epicenter of the summer gaming announcements. We got nearly 50 major game announcements and updates, from games launching later this year to those in early development without a release date at all.
Hosts Geoff Keighley and Lucy James revealed both major triple-A titles, updates on upcoming double-A games and announcements for indie titles. Here’s a breakdown of all of the announcements revealed at the event, both major and minor.
Resident Evil: Veronica
The show opened with a mysterious, first-person trailer showing someone looking for their brother in a Paris apartment. After a few moments of tension, it reveals that this person is Claire Redfield, fresh off of her experience in Raccoon City, and she’s been captured while searching for her brother, Chris.
That’s right, this is the long-awaited remake of Code: Veronica, a game set between its remade sister games, Resident Evils 3 and 4. For more information, read our full write-up.
Two new Cuphead games
Studio MDHR announced, in a whimsical puppet segment, that it’s working on both a new, hand-animated game set in the Cuphead universe, but also a new project called Mighty Cuphead Adventure. At present, neither game has a launch date announced, but presumably the latter is further along than the former, given they showed footage of it.
Mighty Cuphead Adventure is an 8-bit platformer programmed in classic Assembly Language and designed to not only look like but essentially be a Sega Master System games. To learn more, read our full write-up.
Alien Isolation 2
One of the big reveals at the beginning of the event was the first look at Creative Assembly’s new survival horror game, Alien Isolation 2. It’s not a complete surprise to see it, as the studio teased the sequel a few weeks previously. But this is the first official look at the game, via a few quick glimpse of the new setting on Kurosaki Station.
The trailer shows a miserable, storm-racked world where the Xenomorph is on the hunt for a completely new protagonist. The sole piece of information we’re given implies that they’re somehow responsible for the Xenomorph’s rampage, noting, “Your mistake. It was expensive.” Read our full write-up here.
gen Atlas
Fumito Ueda, legendary director behind Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian, revealed the official title of his next game: gen Atlas (formerly Project Robot). The trailer shows the protagonist of the single-player, open-world action-adventure game exploring a silent, alien world filled with the bodies of mechs.
The trailer for gen Atlas is scarcely less interesting than the one for Project Robot. It shows the protagonist interacting with a giant mecha’s head, using it as a vehicle (including an airship), and attaching it to the bodies of various mechs in order to solve puzzles. The trailer shows them fighting off enemies such as hordes of rats and other mechs. It looks hauntingly beautiful, as most games from Ueda are. It has no release date at present, but it’s coming to PC and consoles.
Blood Message
NetEase and 24 Entertainment revealed a story trailer for their first triple-A single-player game, Blood Message. The publisher refers to as “a cinematic and narrative-driven linear action-adventure” set in Tang Dynasty-era China. The game follows the journey of a messenger tasked with delivering an important missive alongside his young son — no easy task as the recipient is 1,000 miles away.
“The world has heard too many stories of emperors and generals—Blood Message is an ode to the unsung heroes,” says NetEase of the game’s premise. It also features stealth-and-survival-based combat and a large world inspired by the real landscapes of East and Central Asia. At present, it has no release date, but it’s in development for both PC and consoles.
Stranger Than Heaven
RGG Studio’s upcoming period-set action game, Stranger Than Heaven, got a new story trailer and a release date: It launches on January 15, 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Masayoshi Yokoyama, head of RGG Studios, took to the stage to announce not only the date, but something surprising: New cast members.
Not only did Snoop Dogg appear on stage to debut his character, named Orpheus, but Tupac Shakur himself appeared in the trailer as a character named Amaru. According to Sega, Tupac’s likeness is being crafted without the use of AI in collaboration with his estate. To find out Snoop’s words on Death Row Games, read Dean’s write-up here.
HAEX
Dead Astronauts revealed their debut title, HAEX, a bizarre sci-fi co-op survival game for up to 4 players. Players have to fend off attacks by aliens and stay alive long enough to investigate a mysterious anomaly — which, judging by what the trailer shows, involves jamming a cube covered in mysterious writing into ports that spawn monoliths. It’s launching sometime in 2027.
It’s not clear if HAEX is the game that Dead Astronauts was making at the time it closed its $4.1 million seed funding round. The game at the time was called VEIL and was described as “a mysterious world inspired by the vast Nordic wilderness.” That could also easily describe HAEX, as the game’s forested world is quite arresting.
Dead by Daylight’s 10th Anniversary
Astonishing to consider, but Dead by Daylight has been around for 10 years. We already know that Jason Vorhees is joining the game as a Killer on June 16. However, during Summer Game Fest, Behaviour Interactive dropped a tease for another livestream event on June 14 that also hinted at another Killer coming in the near-future.
If the teaser is a reference to an existing character licensed for the game, it’s one I don’t recognize. The teaser shows various references to birthdays, including a character singing the jingle while balloons and cake festoon the screen, but that could be because it’s Dead by Daylight’s birthday. We’ll see who the new character might be on the 14th.
Mortal Shell II
Mortal Shell II was not part of Summer Game Fest’s show for long, but it did drop one piece of news: An open beta for the game is now live on Steam. The trailer also shows some gameplay for the ARPG.
Developer Cold Symmetry says that the open beta gives access to the game’s prologue and a section of the open world. Mortal Shell 2 is due out later this year.
SAND: Raiders of Sophie
tinyBuild showed up at the event with a trailer for team Hologryph’s upcoming game, SAND: Raiders of Sophie, as well as a release date: June 10. The game’s core gameplay loop revolves around building up your fortress on legs and using it to hunt down treasure and loot.
Of course, because it’s a multiplayer game, other players can interfere while on their own pursuits. As tinyBuild describes it: “Clash with other players in a brutal procedurally generated desert forged by history and chaos.”
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced
Ubisoft’s upcoming remake of the pirate-y Assassin’s Creed game got a new trailer at SGF, showcasing the beautified environment and the “resynced” version of its most popular shanty, “Leave Her Johnny” by Woodkid.
For more information on Resynced, which Ubisoft has shown at length, read our report on it here.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin
Lucy James teased this game as being a reunion between “one of the best action game developers in the world” with “a legendary franchise.” The trailer not only shows the sewers where the Heroes in a Half-Shell make their homes, but also glimpses of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’s iconic weaponry.
The trailer concludes with a grand version of their theme song, revealing that Platinum Games is making The Last Ronin. It’s doing so in partnership with Paramount Games Studio, a unified studio that the company revealed in tandem with the game. To read more details, check-out Dean’s write-up.
Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3: Runners
Ben Starr took the stage to announce the next season of Fortnite, called “Runners,” which launched shortly after the show concluded. According to the trailer, the season’s main hook is collecting Sprites, which must be extracted to add abilities to your permanent repertoire.
The trailer also teased a new map, called the Shattered Coast, which is teeming with said Sprites. The new season’s Battle Pass also includes the Guardian, a Sprite-powered mech suit that is automatically unlocked and can be customized. (Also, John Wick’s Dog makes an appearance in the trailer.)
Gundam Rogue Orbit
Bandai Namco brought out the literal big guns with a trailer for a new Gundam game, called Rogue Orbit. While gen Atlas may have whetted the collective whistle for giant robots, Gundam Rogue Orbit delivered them at their finest. The trailer also showed a bit of the gameplay, and it appeared as though the crew will be fighting some kind of mechanized beasts.
According to Bandai Namco, Rogue Orbit is “a brand-new timeline in the Gundam saga, where humanity must fight for survival against an unknown threat.” The main character is RE-X, who pilots the Gundam Helix. The game is currently scheduled for launch sometime in 2027.
An Egg-stremely Hard Game
Solo developer Adrián Mulero, whose debut title was the physics-based multiplayer title Knock’Em Out, revealed the release date for his next game at Summer Game Fest. Fittingly called An Egg-stremely Hard Game, it stars two geese parents attempting to carry their fragile egg across various treacherous landscapes.
Mulero revealed the game last October, and launched a demo for it in December. The game’s official release date is July 24, making it one of the most immediate launches shown at the event. It also supports 4-player co-op in a new multiplayer mode, in which multiple geese attempt to move eggs at once.
Crossfire
The next announcement trailer came from That’s No Moon, which revealed its upcoming third-person shooter title, Crossfire. A single-player version of the online shooter from Smilegate of the same name, this Crossfire tells a story about Layla Qassem and Delroy Cross, two enemies in an uneasy alliance against a bigger threat.
In addition to the narrative, the game features an adaptive cover system, in which player character Layla adjusts her stance and body to the cover around her, all the better to remain in stealth. For more information on That’s No Moon’s new project and Smilegate’s involvement, read Dean’s write-up here.
Control Resonant
Remedy Entertainment’s sequel to Control got another trailer at the showcase, showing more details about the game’s story and gameplay. The trippy trailer reveals of the game’s mind-bending visuals as Dylan Faden battles the paranormal to the sounds of “Manalan Mailla” by Vilma Jää.
Beyond the visuals, we don’t know much more about the game than we did from the last trailer we saw. But Dean got some hands-on time with Control Resonant at Summer Game Fest, so he got a better look at how the game is going to feel. Read more of his impressions here.
Guild Wars 3
ArenaNet finally drew back the curtain on the long-awaited third game in its MMORPG series. Guild Wars 3 takes place in a new region and stars the Vaelwardens, adventurers that bond with and protect the nature spirits of that region. It’s being developed for PC and PlayStation 5, the first Guild Wars title to launch on console.
At present, the game has no release date, and, judging by the fact that the open beta is planned for fall 2027, it could be quite some time before we see the full game. To read more details on how Guild Wars 3 fits into the series and how Arena Net is innovating on the gameplay, read my write-up here.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer
Twenty-five-odd years after the launch of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace and all us kids are finally grown enough to profess how much we loved podracing (and no longer listen to those adults who tried to tell us it sucked). Not only that, but the story trailer of Star Wars: Galactic Racer shows that apparently some of those kids grew up to make a video game for their fellow podracing fans.
Fuse Games revealed that the game follows a new Galactic League of racers, fomented on the Outer Rim after the fall of the Empire. There also appears to be a campaign mode starring an original playable character. For more details, read Alex’s write-up on the game here.
End of Abyss
A new horror game game from Section 9 Interactive got a reveal in the middle of the showcase: End of Abyss. The trailer appears to depict a top-down, gloomy title starring someone named Cel investigating a disturbance in an underground facility. According to the game’s page on the Epic Games Store, Cel will come face-to-face with twisted horrors in the derelict facility.
Fittingly, the horror game has a release date of October 1, bringing it to gamers during the spooky month. The game’s store page also teases a potentially Metroidvania-style experience, noting, “Pathways open as you grow stronger, allowing you to return to forgotten corridors and secrets once sealed away.”
Last Harbor
tinyBuild revealed a new open-world multiplayer survival game with a horror twist at the show. In Last Harbor, players are survivors of a zombie apocalypse who live on boats in order to avoid the roaming undead. Unfortunately, they need to come ashore every now and then to gather resources to live and upgrade their boats, which not only invites hostility from the zombies but from other players.
One of the main gameplay loops involves upgrading and maintaining your boat, but you can also find safe, guarded harbors where you pay to anchor. But most of the resources are on unmapped islands, based on the real San Juan Islands near Washington State. And as the trailer shows, the zombies will attack on sight and even the ocean is not entirely safe. The game has no release date yet.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads
Formerly known as “New Virtua Fighter Project,” Virtua Fighter Crossroads got its official reveal at Summer Game Fest, showing both its story and its playable fighters. The trailer focuses on new character Cielo and his entanglement with organized crime, which leads him to encounter Virtua Fighter stalwart Pai Chan. Cielo is one of four protagonists, whose choices and encounters will determine the outcome of the story.
Sega held a full showcase for Crossroads after the Summer Game Fest show, where it revealed that the game’s narrative is getting a lot of focus (with four dedicated writers, including Ghost of Tsushima’s Brad Kane). Crossroads takes place in the island nation of Vilasapara, and is set during its major martial arts tournament while the fighters are being stalked by a serial killer. For more details, read Dean’s write-up here. The game launches sometime in 2027.
Runescape: Dragonwilds & Switch 2 trailers
The first Runescape experience to come to console got extra focus during Summer Game Fest, with a trailer showing some of the gameplay and dragons from the new Dragonwilds expansion. The trailer also confirms it’s coming to both PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 15.
In addition, we also got trailers for upcoming Switch 2 games during this same break period. These included trailers for The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales (coming from Square Enix on June 18), Orbitals (coming from Kepler Interactive and Shapefarm this summer) and Starkseeker: Astroneer Expeditions (coming from System Era and Devolver Digital on June 11).
Soulframe pre-alpha, Grounded 2 and Mafia: The Old Country
The next few moments of the show contained a number of shorter trailers. Digital Extremes made its appearance at the midpoint, at which point it dropped a new trailer for Soulframe, its upcoming fantasy title. The trailer showed more gameplay and also revealed that the pre-alpha is currently available for sign-ups.
There was also a trailer for the upcoming expansion for the presently early-access title, Grounded 2. The Into the Abyss update launches on August 11, which is also the date that the game launches on PlayStation 5. Rounding out this trailer segment was Mafia: The Old Country, which is getting a story expansion called Man of Honor, which brings back Mafia antagonist Don Salieri. It launches on August 14.
1666 Amsterdam
Patrice Desilets, the creator of the Assassin’s Creed series, brought his new game to the show with flare: 1666 Amsterdam is a third-person narrative-based action-adventure game with dark fantasy vibes, developed by Panache Digital Games over the course of 16 years. It tells the story of a world of witchcraft shaped by powerful, hidden forces that walk the streets at night.
The story is told across three timelines, which take place across 1666, 1999 and the present-day. The main characters appear to be a Collector named Noa, and a man from 1999 named Aaron who sees the world through the eyes of a cat. No, I can’t make it any clearer than that — I’m just as confused and intrigued as you are. Luckily, a demo is currently out so we can get started uncovering the mysteries. Read Dean’s write-up here.
SAW: Genesis
One of the surprise reveals of the show was one of the new games published by Bloober Team. It’s an asymmetrical horror game from Broken Mirror and Anshar Studios called SAW: Genesis, featuring 3v1 confrontations in which players are either a team of Accused victims or a singular Judge out to ruin their days. As one might expect of a property from this franchise, the Accused may not survive with all of their body parts.
Perhaps more unexpected than the game itself is the setting. Genesis takes place after World War I, in which the Judge is an early adherent of the Jigsaw mindset, using deadly traps to “save” the Accused from their rotten lives. The Judge will have access to features in the procedurally generated maps that the Accused won’t, though they can overpower him if given the chance. The game doesn’t have a release date, but players can sign up for the closed alpha.
Lords of the Fallen 2
Shortly after breaking its exclusivity deal with Epic Games Publishing, CI brought its new action-RPG, Lords of the Fallen 2, to Summer Game Fest. The trailer shows off the gameplay, gear and enemies featured in the game, including a new biome based on Asian folklore called Ysiguen, a katana-based class and a new boss called Lingao the Souring Storm.
The trailer also drops the news that Lords of the Fallen 2 is coming to Steam on PC as well as the Epic Games Store, so clearly CI Games wasted no time on that. It’s also coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S sometime this fall. One presumes, given the phobia that all of these games appear to have of being in the same postcode as GTA VI, that it will launch before November 19.
Star Wars: Zero Company
Bitreactor officially revealed its Star Wars-based strategy game for an August 27 release date, meaning we won’t have long to wait before we can dive into some tactical nonsense in a galaxy far, far away. The trailer reveals more about the titular Zero Company, an outfit of mercs that include the most eclectic mix of galactic outcasts one could find.
Given that the game takes place after the Clone War, it’s possibly not a surprise that Anakin Skywalker is also making an appearance. According to Bitreactor, the game is going to be as brutal as you’ve come to expect from XCOM-like titles. There will even be permadeath, though one assumes that no canonical characters will meet their end here. Read my full write-up here.
The Blood of the Dawnwalker
Rebel Wolves dropped a new trailer for its upcoming dark fantasy ARPG, The Blood of the Dawnwalker, which includes not only the main character, Coen, but also shows more of the world in which he lives — which includes a lengthy sequence set in the 21st century. According to the developers, Blood of the Dawnwalker will detail more about Coen’s origin story, which will begin in the 14th century.
The studio also teased more about the future of the series, noting that the “next installments of [Coen’s] saga will bring in new stories and new characters, but they will take place in different eras, locations and cultures.” Read more about the game’s setting in Dean’s write-up here.
Among Us: On Guard (and more)
Innersloth announced it is working on a new standalone game set in the Among Us universe called On Guard, starring a character named Guard. This new take on the Among Us formula puts the player in the body of a security guard who must find the culprit of a murder onboard their ship.
In addition to the game, Innersloth had a second piece of Among Us news. Namely, that the Among Us animated series, which was first announced years ago, has shadow-dropped on Paramount+. All 10 episodes are available to watch now. For more details, read Dean’s write-up here.
This story is developing.
