Polyarc, the development studio behind the Moss series of VR games, announced today that it is shutting down, winding down active development on its titles. It has also published a spreadsheet of its current employees, imploring studios who are hiring to consider their now-laid-off staff, which appear to number around 30.
Polyarc started in 2016 as a VR game studio, and it later raised $9 million in 2020 with the intention of adding AR development to its roster. At present, it’s created Moss, Moss: Book II and Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss in VR. It also released Moss: The Forgotten Relic, a non-VR remastering of both Moss titles, a few months ago.
The LinkedIn message reads: “After nearly 12 years riding the joyous rollercoaster of emotions that is making video games, our time together has come to an end. As we wind down active development, we are saying our farewells to each other. Working together over all of these years has been an honor. Bringing surprise and delight to those who played our games has been a privilege. Thank you to everyone at Polyarc, our work is now finished.”
The studio doesn’t say why it is shutting down, but earlier this year the studio laid off two-thirds of its staff. At the time, the studio issued a statement saying that it had failed to secure funding following the cancelation of a large, unnamed project.
