Summer Game Fest’s official show aired today and the very first trailer shown was for Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of classic spin-off title Code Veronica. The trailer appears to show first-person gameplay (though that could have been purely to hide the reveal) and gives a release window of 2027.
Capcom describes the game on the official website as such: “This new title preserves the essence of the original game, while introducing modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics. In 2027, madness and intrigue, love and hate all combine to create a chilling new entry in survival horror.” It has confirmed that part of the game will still take place on Umbrella stronghold Rockfort Island.
The trailer showed Claire Redfield visiting an apartment in Paris, looking for her brother Chris. Within moments of entering, she’s ambushed and captured, presumably by the same Umbrella forces who apprehended her in the original — though the sequence perhaps lacks the action of Claire outrunning a helicopter. Presumably this is the “reimagined storyline” mentioned above.
A remake of Code Veronica has long been rumored to be in development at Capcom, along with a few other remakes of classic Resident Evil titles. This is the first official confirmation that the game is in the works, and it’s penciled in for 2027. Resident Evil games traditionally release in the first half of any given year, which might narrow down the release window. Requiem, the most recent mainline title, launched on February 27.
