Studio MDHR has been busy. At Summer Game Fest, the Canadian game studio said it was working on a new hand-animated Cuphead video game.

And Studio MDHR is working on a game that is a love letter to the games that inspired it to make games in the first place.

In a small sneak peek, it revealed Mighty Cuphead Adventure platform shooter. Currently in development. Cuphead is 12 years old now, as it debuted in 2014. (And don’t I know it).

Studio MDHR officially confirmed that development has begun on a brand-new, hand-animated Cuphead video game that will take their beloved characters on a fresh, exciting adventure. This ambitious project is still in its earliest stages of development, and the team looks forward to revealing more at a later date.

“Craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do here at Studio MDHR,” said cofounder Chad Moldenhauer, in a statement. “When it came time to peel back the curtain and share a little bit about what we’ve been up to, we couldn’t imagine a more fun way to do so than with today’s Special Bulletin. Crafted with the wonderful teams at Toronto’s Stop Motion Department & Continue Agency, we hope the announcement will transport players to the era we’ll be taking them to in our next project, Mighty Cuphead Adventure.”

On that note, a small team within Studio MDHR has been working in secret on another project: an 8-bit action platformer named Mighty Cuphead Adventure. In true Studio MDHR fashion, this game goes beyond just taking inspiration from the classics of the 1980s.

It is actually built with technology of the era. That’s right: Mighty Cuphead Adventure is programmed in classic Assembly Language and designed with the exacting specifications of the Sega Master System home gaming console in mind. While the game will absolutely be compatible with modern consoles and PC, players who want a true blast from the past will be able to experience it on a physical cartridge on the Sega Master System home gaming console.

Studio MDHR will share much more about Mighty Cuphead Adventure in the months ahead.

Studio MDHR is an independent video game developer that exists to surprise and delight our players! Founded in Canada by brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer based on their shared love of retro arcade action and vintage cartoons, the studio released their flagship title Cuphead in 2017 for Xbox One and PC, to both critical acclaim and commercial success. Since release, the game has also come to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, and received a followup expansion The Delicious Last Course in 2022.

Cuphead has spawned a global consumer product program, and has even been reimagined as a cartoon show of its own (The Cuphead Show!) at Netflix Animation. At their core, Studio MDHR remains committed to craftsmanship and excellence, pushing themselves to harness classic tools and techniques to bring vintage experiences to life for new generations.
