Ubisoft has officially revealed the long-rumored remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, called Resynced, which officially launches on July 9, 2026. It’s a complete rebuild of the original game in the Anvil engine, with new gameplay, new characters, and a fresh take on the story while remaining a single-player narrative action-adventure game.

Narrated by Matt Ryan, who plays protagonist Edward Kenway in both the original and Resynced, the reveal shows multiple updates to the gameplay, including updated combat and enhanced ship combat. They even note how they’ve made the eavesdropping missions bearable, acknowledging what a pain they were in the original game. Resynced introduces new characters, officers who can join Edward’s ship, the Jackdaw.

Black Flag was unquestionably an inflection point for the series — the ship combat became a staple of the series from that point forward, and even inspired multiplayer spin-off Skull & Bones. It also told a story about the Templar/Assassin conflict from a different, outsider perspective — both in the historical series and the present day narrative — which became more common after Black Flag.

Ubisoft has shifted the Assassin’s Creed series under Vantage Studios under its new Creative House structure. They first teased the Black Flag remake in March, where they also discussed other future games in the series. Other Assassin’s Creed games currently in development are Codenamed Hexe, the next narrative-driven game; Codename Invictus, a PvP multiplayer title; and “several other projects… all at different stages of development,” says Jean Guesdon, the series’ head of content.
