The Super Mario Galaxy Movie became the first movie of 2026 to reach the $1 dollar milestone, now being well on its way to beating the original movie that grossed 1.36 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

The animated sequel was produced by Universal and Illumination and was based on the popular Nintendo mascot, Super Mario and his collection of friends and enemies.

The movie’s plot saw Mario and friends venture into space, exploring cosmic worlds and tackling galactic challenges far from the familiar Mushroom Kingdom.

While various games inspired the first movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was an adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy, one of the most critically acclaimed entries in the long-running video game series.

The game and its sequel were originally released on the GameCube before being remastered for the Nintendo Switch in 2025.

The movie had a relatively modest budget (compared to most blockbusters) of $110 million, so it will therefore be considered a huge success for the studios and Nintendo. Despite this, the film only has a score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Like the original film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reunited cast members Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key and Jack Black, also adding Donald Glover, Glen Powell and Benny Safdie to voice new characters.
