Chaos Manufacturing, a new studio formed by veteran developers, made its public debut today by revealing SOL Shogunate, a single-player samurai space opera set in an alternate-future solar system.
The announcement appeared during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted, marking the first look at a project the team describes as a fusion of high-style combat, sci-fi world-building, and music-driven spectacle.
The game follows Yuzuki, the last surviving heir of a once-prominent samurai lineage, whose family was wiped out by a rival clan. Now an outlaw ronin, she cuts a path through gleaming lunar megacities where artificial gravity, towering space elevators, and monolithic industrial sectors reflect the Shogunate’s grip over humanity.
As she seeks revenge, players will confront elite warriors, unravel the politics behind the Shogunate’s rule, and uncover a long-buried conflict beneath the surface of the Moon.
As a third-person action RPG, SOL Shogunate emphasizes fast, expressive swordplay enhanced by futuristic augmentation systems. Players can choose from multiple weapon types, each featuring unique stances and fighting styles, and customize them further with elemental infusions that alter both offense and strategy. Combat is designed to stay true to samurai precision while embracing the spectacle of sci-fi powers, allowing Yuzuki to chain attacks, manipulate weaknesses, and adapt as enemy encounters grow more complex.
A gene-splicing upgrade system deepens the customization layer, offering enhancements such as bio-ceramic skin or advanced vision modules to mold Yuzuki into a personalized weapon. These upgrades reflect the broader theme of transhumanism woven into the game’s astro-feudal setting.
“In this future that we’ve envisioned, the way of the sword is the rule in the solar system,” Guy Costantini, chief executive officer of Chaos Manufacturing, said in an interview with GamesBeat. “Now, what does that actually mean? The way we talk about SOL Shogunate is we affectionately call it a samurai space opera. Now, what do we mean by samurai space opera? We’re being both kind of figurative and literal on it, it’s hack and slash samurai combat in space, which means the fantasy fulfillment, I say, of what if John Wick was a space samurai that’s genetically modified.”
The worldbuilding blends futuristic sci-fi aesthetics with the visual language of Japanese history. Each lunar metropolis draws inspiration from a distinct era, from ornate feudal motifs to sleek Neo-Edo futurism. Players will navigate these biomes using gravity-assist gear, traverse open lunar stretches on a mechanized steed or monocycle, and explore environments that hide secrets tied to an ancient war.

“You end up with a much different outcome to World War II, but it’s almost the same, like the Allies still win, but there’s a twist to it,” Costantini said. “Japan gets an armistice, and they’re able to take a bunch of scientists and really focus on the space program, the USSR and the US kind of sort of continue to fight each other, and this Eastern Commonwealth of Nations really propels humanity to space.”
This approach not only gives SOL Shogunate a striking identity but also frames humanity’s expansion across the solar system as a cultural saga where the Shogunate’s authority reaches far beyond Earth.
Founded by industry veterans with decades of collective experience, Chaos Manufacturing is a remote-first game studio that aims to combine combat, narrative, and music in harmony to create emotionally resonant action games. SOL Shogunate is their debut project, currently in early development.
The studio says the game will launch “when it’s ready,” which likely means no earlier than 2027. For more details, check out the Steam page that just went live today.
