Atari is reviving one of gaming’s earliest icons, and one of its first true rivals, with the Intellivision Sprint. The “new” console is a modern reimagining of the classic 1980 original, to celebrate the system’s 45th anniversary.

The Intellivision Sprint is developed in partnership with Plaion, and the new console blends nostalgia and modernization by offering 45 built-in games, upgraded hardware, and authentic design details that recall the original’s black-and-gold aesthetic.

The Intellivision Sprint launches for $149.99, with preorders now open and shipping set for December 5, 2025. The console comes with two wireless controllers, HDMI output, and a USB-A port for expanding the game library. According to Atari, the package includes two custom controller overlays for every title, which is a nod to the distinctive original.

The built-in library represents the strongest parts of the Intellivision’s 1980s identity, including sports titles like Baseball, Super Pro Football, Soccer, and Tennis, as well as strategy and arcade favorites such as Sea Battle, Utopia, Astrosmash, and Shark! Shark! This blend of genres reflects what once set Intellivision apart from the Atari 2600, its fierce rival during what game historians refer to as The First Console War.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate Intellivision’s 45th anniversary, and what better way to honor it than by bringing back this innovative console for fans to experience once again?” Matt Burnett, vice president of strategic operations at Atari, said in a prepared statement. “Becoming caretakers of such an important brand is both a big responsibility and a very fun expansion of our work at Atari.”

The new system is part of Atari’s broader initiative to revitalize and integrate legacy brands. Following its 2024 acquisition of Intellivision’s brand and catalog, Atari began incorporating its former rival’s history into modern projects, including The First Console War expansion for Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. The Intellivision Sprint marks the first new piece of hardware under that banner, expanding Atari’s position in the fast-growing retro and plug-and-play market.

“It has been rewarding to apply some of the learnings from our successful collaboration on the Atari+ retro consoles to the Intellivison Sprint,” Ben Jones, commercial director of Plaion, said in a prepared statement. “We’re proud to bring a modern-take on this ground-breaking console to Intellivision fans and collectors.”
