The Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu revealed that Square Enix is working on a World of Final Fantasy sequel that will come out for Android and iOS, via Gematsu. World of Final Fantasy: Meli-Melo is launching in Japan in 2017. It does not have a U.S. release date yet. We have contacted Square Enix inquiring about a U.S. release and will update this story if they respond.
Moving the series to mobile could attract a new audience. Square Enix has been aggressive with making Final Fantasy games for phones and tablets, including ports of classics like Final Fantasy IX and new games like Record Keeper and Brave Exvius.
World of Final Fantasy launched last year for PlayStation 4 and Vita and sold over 800,000 copies, according to Famitsu. It is a more family-friendly role-playing game that features appearances from characters across the series and Pokémon-like monster collection. It also brought back classic Final Fantasy features like the active time battle (ATB) system. A PC version came out earlier this month.
The original characters introduced in the first game will return in Meli-Melo, and the mobile title will support cooperative multiplayer.
