Electronic Arts isn’t a publisher known for taking risks, but it is giving at least one smaller game a chance in 2016.
Next week, EA and developer ColdWood Interactive release Unravel, a puzzle-platformer game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s a smaller work for EA, costing $20, and it doesn’t feature explosions and automatic military weapons. It is all about the bonds that exist between people. This is a bit unexpected for EA — a company known for the Battlefield shooters and Madden NFL games — but it is trying to position this game in a way to broaden the kinds of games it is offering. This is important as more players buy into its EA Access and Origin Access subscription services for the Xbox One and PC, respectively. The publisher is likely trying to get different kinds of people to subscribe to that program — which provides early trials, a library of older games, and discounts — by introducing a wider variety of games. That way, if someone signs up for Access to get Unravel, maybe they’ll check out Dragon Age: Inquisition next.
