Fox 31, a digital news outlet, recently aired a feature entitled, “Sex Box Predators.” I’m certain you can guess what the investigation was about.
After interviewing concerned parents and victimized internet users, the Fox News report concluded that online-gaming venues are tantamount to a “predator’s playground.” What makes the already misleading investigation seem even more farcical is the sense of grandeur with which the interviewees deliver their depositions. It’s as though none of them have ever used the Internet!
I’ll admit that the Internet is a weird place. But if you expect to use such a powerful communicative tool with such autonomy, you better be prepared to meet morons and perverts every once in a while. As for children: Survey their chatting habits, disable voice chat, or impose restrictions on their online privileges. Be a parent!
Oh, and before you wig out about predators playing Team Slayer with your son, make sure that he’s playing a game which is age-appropriate. That’s right. Fox News interviewed a 13 year-old about his experiences with Halo 3, an M-rated game (17+).
