Red Barrels announced today that The Outlast Trials, which launched its full version out of early access one month ago, has officially reached two million players on PC and console. Now the developers are launching the game’s first limited-time event, called Toxic Shock, next week.
The Outlast Trials launched in early access in May 2023 and in its full version on March 5 this year. The two-million player count includes those who began playing in early access, and according to Red Barrels, those players have experienced over 38 million deaths in-game. Out of that number, 600,000 have completed the trials and “became Reborn.”
The new update, Toxic Shock, is a limited-time event involving a chemical experiment. This event features a new location “variator,” new secondary objectives and exclusive rewards. It launches next week, with patch notes coming out on April 16. Red Barrels is also launching two new Mk-Challenges in the coming weeks.
Alex Charbonneau, the game’s director, said of the update, “Listening closely to our players has always been at the heart of what we do at Red Barrels. It’s players’ feedback that lights the way, guiding us on how to refine and elevate the game to the pinnacle of horror gaming experiences. We’re dedicated to fine-tuning the game, to deliver a game that is not only horrifying and thrilling but also deeply immersive. Our vision is to create a multiplayer experience that continues to captivate and terrify players for years to come.”
