At The Game Awards, Larian Studios revealed a cinematic trailer for a brand-new Divinity game, confirming rumors circulating about a mysterious statue that appeared in the desert before the show.
Divinity is a franchise that’s been around for over 20 years. It first began in 2002 with Divine Divinity, an isometric action RPG that blended Diablo-style combat with deep narrative choice and systemic interactivity. It quickly earned a cult following for its humor, freedom-driven design, and willingness to let players solve problems creatively.
The series evolved with Beyond Divinity in 2004, which experimented with dual-character mechanics and darker storytelling, before pivoting dramatically with Divinity II: Ego Draconis in 2009. That entry moved the franchise into full 3D, allowing players to transform into a dragon, which was an ambitious leap that showcased Larian’s appetite for experimentation despite technical challenges at the time.
Then, Divinity changed once again with the release of both Divinity: Original Sin games, embracing turn-based combat mechanics, which, of course, then led Larian to develop the game of the year-winning Baldur’s Gate 3.
The cinematic trailer revealed at The Game Awards is very light on details, but it absolutely showcases the iconic dark vibes and penchant for somewhat uncomfortable humor that the previous games were known for at times.
At the end of the trailer, the man who was being burned alive erupts into a fountain of blood and gore, emaciating himself and many of the bystanders. The explosion of blood and fire welds the corpses into the pyre and creates the monstrosity you see in the thumbnail above.
Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled ‘Divinity.’ We’re ready to bring everything we’ve done previously into one place. This marks the beginning of something with more breadth, depth, and intimacy than anything we’ve created before. We’ve been building toward this moment ever since we took our fate into our own hands. This is the Divinity we’ve always wanted to make and you’re going to have loads of fun with it.
Swen Vincke, founder and game director of Larian Studios in a prepared statement
In the trailer’s description, it states: “Larian Studios unchains its ambitions to bring you an RPG with greater breadth & depth than ever before.” On-stage, Geoff Keighley claims it’s the biggest game they’ve ever made—even better than Baldur’s Gate 3, which sounds extremely daunting.
More details to come soon.
