It’s tough to find job security in the volatile gaming industry. This week it’s Square Enix employees in Europe facing layoffs.
The Final Fantasy publisher confirmed to U.K. gaming website MCV that it has made some cuts at its British offices, but it did not specify who or how many people it is letting go.
“We do expect changes to the U.K. office, which will affect personnel,” a Square Enix spokesperson told MCV. “We will update you when the time is right, but our priority right now is for the people within the business.”
We’ve contacted Square Enix and asked for the details of these layoffs. We will update with the company’s response.
In March, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada resigned his position after the company reported a significant loss for its fiscal year. The company decided to institute a major restructuring primarily due to disappointing sales of titles like Tomb Raider. That is despite the fact that Tomb Raider is the fast-selling entry in franchise history.
