Protect your spine: Mortal Kombat X in the works for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

The combatants are mortal, but the series looks like it may never die.

Publisher Warner Bros. and developer NetherRealm Studios are officially working on Mortal Kombat X. The two companies revealed the first trailer for the fighter, which will once again bring back the violent martial-arts action the series is known for. The new Mortal Kombat debuts in 2015 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Mortal Kombat is one of a handful of franchises that Warn Bros. Games relies on, and it’s not a big surprise that it has another one in the works.

“Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet,” Mortal Kombat X creative director Ed Boon said in a statement. “The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes, and an all new graphics engine.”

Mortal Kombat X is the follow-up to 2011’s Mortal Kombat, which rebooted the series for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and Vita. NetherRealms then went to work on Injustice: Gods Among Us, which combined the fighting mechanics of Mortal Kombat with the world of Batman, Superman, and DC Comics.

Both Mortal Kombat and Injustice have established strong audiences. NetherRealms was even able to create a free-to-play mobile version of Injustice that is generating a significant amount of revenue for Warner Bros. Months after its release, Injustice is still the 30th highest-grossing game on iPhone, according to industry-intelligence firm App Annie.
