In case you thought playing the Sega game OutRun wasn’t realistic enough, gamer and designer Garnet Hertz is here to help the racer feel more like a car — by turning an actual OutRun arcade cabinet into a car. The OutRun project has many goals (death possibly among them?), but Hertz says he ultimately wants to “un-simulate the driving component of a video game.”
Using GPS and a custom-built iPhone app, the road you see on the screen is a video game version of what’s in front of the car/cabinet in real life, although you won’t see fairly important details like other cars [Conceptlab via Techeblog]:
[video: http://vimeo.com/7494098 400×300]Unfortunately, the screen will only render what is in front of you, not next to you — it’s up to you to find a hot blonde chick who will laugh and holler when you slam into a construction sign (or 18-wheeler) at high speed. Please find enclosed a concept slideshow of the pimp-ified 1986 arcade cabinet making the transition into real life after the jump.
