The Nintendo Switch 2 is already one of the fastest-selling video game consoles of all time and it’s only been on the market for a few months.

According to the company’s latest financial results, 4.54 million Switch 2 consoles were sold in the second quarter of the 2026 financial year (July, August, and September 2025), putting the total count at more than 10.36 million. That figure covers the time period from its launch in June until the end of September.

By comparison, the PlayStation 5 sold 3.3 million units in its second quarter on the market. The PlayStation 4 got off to a hot start by selling 2 million units in its first two weeks, whereas the Switch 2 surpassed 3.5 million units in just four days.

Following the reveal of the Q2 2026 financial results, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa spoke to several members of the Japanese press about the Switch 2’s early success.

“The start of Switch 2 has far exceeded our initial expectations. I want each and every customer to have the opportunity to purchase [a console], and we aim to exceed our current sales plan,” Furukawa said, as reported and translated by TweakTown. “There are regional differences, but overseas, consoles are now available in stores. In Japan, the situation is improving, though it’s still not at a point where customers can buy one anytime. Production is not the bottleneck. The Switch 2 has had an exceptionally strong start, even compared with past gaming consoles.”

If you’re console is so incredibly popular that you’re having trouble keeping up with demand, it’s certainly not the worst problem to have. The Switch 2 is a great option for gamers of all ages and demographics, as it has the raw hardware power to run some of the latest and most demanding games on the market, such as Cyberpunk 2077, but also has the casual portability to excel as the platform of choice for less intense games as well.

Notably, the original Nintendo Switch also continues to sell well. Nintendo confirmed the Switch has sold 154.01 million units as of September 30, 2025, making it the third best-selling console of all time, just behind the Nintendo DS at 154.02 million units. There’s still a bit of a hill to climb at this point for the Switch to ever overtake the PlayStation 2, the currently best-selling console of all time at 160.63 million units.

These numbers are especially surprising when you consider the Switch 2 has already achieved nearly a third of the entire lifetime unit sales of the Nintendo 64 (32.93 million units) and nearly half of the lifetime sales of the Nintendo GameCube (21.74 million units).
