Nintendo dropped a lot of news on us today at the ungodly hour of 6 a.m. Pacific time. We were surprised at how much content there was.
So here I am a bit late talking about the highlights of the moves, which include the new movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Nintendo’s game design guru Shigeru Miyamoto noted that next year is the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. . Nintendo will hold special events at the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto and it will be a sponsor of the 2026 marathon in Kyoto, Japan.
Nintendo dropped a trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a 2026 follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination and Nintendo. The first movie generated $1.36 billion at the box office since it debuted in 2023. The new film debuts April 3, 2026. That’s a healthy amount of time ahead of the Grand Theft Auto VI launch on May 26, 2026.

Virtual Boy games for Nintendo Switch Online
Virtual Boy was innovative for its time, debuting in. But it was a big dud. Now it’s back with Switch Online gameplay plus a physical Virtual Boy shell that you can put your console into.
The games include Mario’s Tennis, Galactic Pinball, and Teleroboxer, which will be par tof the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack’s lineup of Nintendo Classics on February 17.
My Boss Rush podcasting buddy Chris Melissinos warns that you can get headaches from the fact that the games are only in red and black colors. This new Virtual Boy is an accessory, not a dedicated console. But you can put one in it.
ProbablyMonsters’ Storm Lancers
ProbablyMonsters, an independent game company that raised a lot of money, pivoted to smaller games and now made the surprise announcement of the launch of its first game Storm Lancers during today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast.
The title is an action rogue-like game available today on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch. Storm Lancers combines retro 80’s aesthetics with intense combat, while introducing a new twist to the fan-favorite rogue-like genre: couch co-op.
In Storm Lancers, players crash land on a living planet built around a powerful source of reality magic. They believe they are facing their end. And yet, unexplainably, they have been brought back to life — and tasked with exploring this strange planet, traveling to its fractured core, and fixing all of reality before it collapses. Players will step into the world of Cryptica and master the art of frenetic combat, nimble evasions, and powerful augmentations as they defeat the Harvesters, an alien machine race that feeds on life, energy, and magic.
This game represents a pivot for ProbablyMonsters, which raised $250 million to make triple-A games. Now it has pivoted to make games with shorter time cycles, and the title is live today for $20.
