Medal of Honor trailer suggests Modern Warfare 2 will have a real rival

medal of honorElectronic Arts showed off a trailer of the next Medal of Honor video game at the SpikeTV Video Game Awards 2009 on Saturday night. If the game lives up to the trailer, then Activision Blizzard’s Modern Warfare franchise will finally have some serious competition.

The next Medal of Honor game will arrive in the fall of 2010. The first-person shooter game is set in Afghanistan in modern times. The player takes the role of an elite soldier pursuing secret missions. As you can see from the video, the action is pretty fierce and the game looks almost indistinguishable from some action scenes in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. But of course, a game footage reel is one thing (even if it depicts actual game play), and actual game play is another. We’ll see if EA can reinvigorate a 10-year-old franchise that has been fallow for too long. And we’ll see if EA can execute in spite of some deep cutbacks in many parts of the company.

Since Modern Warfare 2 has become the best-selling video game of all time, with $550 million sold in its first five days alone, it’s clear why EA has to do this game. It seems like gamers have an unquenchable thirst to play games that mimic the reality of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
