Marvel Puzzle Quest is marking its fourth anniversary by releasing the X-Men member Gambit as a new character. The card-slinging mutant will become available on October 5. An anniversary event running from then until October 15 will give players bonus in-game currency.
Marvel Puzzle Quest launched for iOS and Android on October 3, 2013. It has since released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It reached its highest rank in the U.S. Apple charts on October 35, 2013, when it was the No. 17 game, according to App Annie. Right now it is not in the main Apple games rankings, but events and new characters can bring back lapsed players — you see people talking about it more on social media when new characters or events happen.
Marvel Puzzle Quest is a spinoff of the main Puzzle Quest series, with combines the match-three puzzle game with role-playing game elements. Players earn experience points and can learn new spells as they solve puzzles. Puzzle Quest started on consoles in the late 2000s, but it became a natural fit for mobile as both match-three puzzlers and role-playing games proved to be popular genres for the emerging smartphone market.
Marvel has become a major brand in mobile. Along with Puzzle Quest, its super heroes star in the fighting game Marvel: Contest of Champions and the action role-playing game Marvel: Future Fight.
