During PlayStation’s September 2025 State of Play, Insomniac Games finally pulled back the blood-soaked curtain to show off gameplay footage and more details on its highly anticipated upcoming Wolverine game.
Insomniac first announced it was working on a standalone Wolverine game four years ago, multiple years before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 even released, and the company has been quiet about it ever since.
There was never really any doubt that the game was still in development since Insomniac isn’t exactly known to fully announce a game that doesn’t see the light of day, but the years of prolonged silence did have players concerned and anxious. Usually, it’s better for building confidence and interest to have shorter gaps between news and reveals for major launches like this, or holding off entirely on announcements until it’s closer to being ready for primetime.
Following the gameplay trailer, which you can watch embedded above, the State of Play transitioned to a lengthier discussion “Behind the Claws” segment with developers from Insomniac Games, where they went into greater detail about the work they’ve been doing.
Creative director at Insomniac Games, Marcus Smith, said in the video, “The question that comes up to us a lot at Insomniac Games is, ‘Are you willing to make a Wolverine game that is as violent, [and] as visceral, as the character in the comics?'”
Smith added: “The entire game is built around staying true to the Wolverine experience.”
From the debut gameplay footage, we see a game that’s steeped in blood, violence, and aggression, just like you’d expect if you’re at all familiar with Wolverine’s background. Combat looks incredibly fast-paced with gory finishing moves, dismemberments, and lots of rage. For all intents and purposes, it seems like this is precisely what players had been hoping for since the game was originally announced.
PlayStation also included an updated summary for the game, teasing the story’s focus, in the description section of the new gameplay trailer on YouTube:
Become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes – unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination – to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be. From Insomniac Games, the developers of the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, comes Marvel’s Wolverine, an all-new take on an iconic character based on Marvel Comics. Developed in collaboration with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, Marvel’s Wolverine coming to PlayStation®5 consoles Fall 2026.
This second video also announces the actor behind the voice and motion capture for Wolverine himself as Liam McIntyre, who has a long list of vocal roles in animation (Aquaman in various DC projects) and games (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Gears 5), as well as experience as the lead in the Starz hit series, Spartacus.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man games are well-known for the fluidity in their movement mechanics, the fidelity of their visuals, and the intensity of their combat. All of those pillars seem to be carried through here, albeit with some big changes. Wolverine is a very different character both in his personal life and in how he solves problems and fights enemies. Rather than utilizing gadgets to neutralize and subdue enemies, the gameplay footage shows all manner of bloody resolutions to combat instead.
This is poised to be a much more mature and intense kind of game, which represents slightly new territory for a developer like Insomniac Games, a studio that first rose to mainstream prominence by developing whimsical 3D platformers like Spyro the Dragon for the original PlayStation over 25 years ago.
More details are coming for Marvel’s Wolverine in the spring of next year, with a targeted release window exclusively on PlayStation 5 consoles in the fall of 2026.
