After 33 years, iconic gaming publication Game Informer was shut down by GameStop

GameStop shutters Game Informer after 33 years

Game Informer is no more after 33 years of publication and 367 issues. The iconic gaming magazine was the longest running gaming publication in the U.S. prior to its demise.

Game Informer published its first issue in August 1991 where it was distributed in gaming stores. Eventurally, GameStop acquired the outlet when it purchased rival retailer FuncoLand in 2000. By 2012, Game Informer became the third most widely read magazine in the U.S..

While GameStop’s meme stock status has helped keep the retailer afloat, the company is not profitable; In Q1 FY24 (ending June 30, 2024), Game Stop’s net loss totaled $32.3 million.

In March, the retailer announced a series of layoffs to reduce its costs. The company’s selling, general and administrative expenses (SG&A) totaled $295.1 million in its latest filing — down 18% from $359.2 million the prior quarter.
