Beast of Reincarnation, the ambitious new action RPG from Game Freak that marks the studio’s first major title outside the Pokémon franchise, is shaping up to be one of 2026’s most intriguing genre hybrids.

In new footage and commentary released today, developers offered a deeper look at the game’s combat systems and confirmed a Summer 2026 release window for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.

Originally teased as Project Bloom, Beast of Reincarnation has steadily revealed more of its identity as a one-person, one-dog action RPG built around demanding, technical combat and deep world exploration.

Developed in collaboration with publisher Fictions, the title pairs fast-paced action with narrative depth, promising a blend of Souls-like encounters and emotional storytelling centered on protagonist Emma and her loyal canine companion, Koo.

The newest gameplay showcases a combat system that blends technical precision with cinematic flair. Unlike the turn-based traditions of Game Freak’s previous work, Beast of Reincarnation leans into real-time engagements where timing, positioning, and strategy all factor into success.

Enemies range from towering corrupted beasts to mechanized adversaries, each demanding players adapt on the fly and exploit weaknesses rather than rely on brute force. Environmental hazards and shifting terrain also appear to play into encounters, hinting at dynamic level design that rewards observation as much as reflexes.

Beast of Reincarnation is set in a post-apocalyptic Japan in the year 4026, where corruption has fractured both the land and its people. Players assume the role of Emma the Sealer, a young woman cursed as a “Blighted One,” whose journey is intertwined with the fate of humanity itself. Her companion Koo is more than just a pet — the bond between them is woven into both story and gameplay, with previews suggesting it unlocks unique abilities and alters combat encounters as their relationship deepens.

“Beast of Reincarnation is a new challenge born from Game Freak’s own initiative called ‘Gear Project,’ designed to create new experiences unlike anything before,” Shigeru Ohmori, general producer at Game Freak, said during today’s Xbox Developer Direct. “In addition to the Pokémon video game series, we have brought forth various original titles, including Pocket Card Jockey, GIGA WRECKER, and more, constantly challenging ourselves to construct new ideas and worldviews.”

This narrative focus, exploring what it means to be human in a world ravaged by corruption, gives Beast of Reincarnation a thematic weight that sets it apart from more mechanical action RPGs. Early comparisons to Studio Ghibli works like Princess Mononoke have surfaced due to the emotional core and environmental motifs, though the game’s tone remains grounded in its own vision of survival and resilience rather than outright fantasy.

Beast of Reincarnation represents a significant departure from the portable, creature-collecting formula that defined its legacy. While the Pokémon series continues to be a juggernaut for the studio, this project positions the team in a different competitive space: the single-player action RPG market dominated by franchises like Nier: Automata, Elden Ring, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

If the final game can deliver on its promise of accessible yet deep combat paired with a compelling narrative and world design, it could become one of 2026’s breakout hits and a new pillar in Game Freak’s portfolio.
