Fortnite and Coachella are partnering again, with virtual Coachella items and stages coming to Fortnite Festival this week. As part of the crossover event, gamers will be able to play on virtual Coachella stages, collect Coachella-themed items, and play music-based minigames on a new location called Sahara Island, a virtual duplicate of the real Sahara Tent at the live festival.
Coachella takes over the Festival’s Jam Stage this year. On the main stage, players can perform Jam Tracks from the artists who will perform at Coachella. The virtual stage on Sahara Island will feature musical minigames and takeovers from Grimes and DJ Snake. There will also be an augmented reality crossover between the island and the Sahara Tent on Coachella’s YouTube livestream on the second weekend.
Sam Schoonover, Coachella’s innovation lead, said in a statement, “In our pursuit to bring Coachella to a broader online audience, we’re activating across Fortnite and the Epic Games ecosystem to create new in-game music experiences that allow online fans to get closer to the festival than ever before. This partnership enables us to expand the festival virtually in ways that aren’t possible anywhere else, making Coachella more accessible to fans around the globe.”
This is not Coachella’s only crossover with games this year. Last week, Avalanche announced it was partnering with the festival on Coachella Quests, a blockchain-based loyalty game that allows real-life attendees to earn points and redeem rewards in exchange for completing tasks.
