Pokémon history was made over the weekend when Italy’s Arash Ommati defeated Japan’s Ryouske Kosuge in the finals of the Masters Division World Pokémon Championships. This is the first time that a European has won the most prestigious event in competitive Pokémon.

“The Pokémon World Championships celebrate an international community that is unified by the fun, friendship, and mutual respect that the Pokémon spirit embodies,” The Pokémon Company International director of consumer marketing J.C. Smith said. “We are incredibly proud of all the players who competed this weekend and want to extend a big congratulations to the 2013 Pokémon World Champions who represented their nations proudly.”
Over the weekend, The Pokémon Company International, a subsidiary of Nintendo, held the Pokémon World Championships in Vancouver. The best Pokémon video game and trading-card game players on the globe gathered in the Canadian city to claim the title of world’s greatest player.

Nintendo plans to release two new Pokémon games later this year. Pokémon X and Y will debut on the 3DS Oct. 12. They will expand the universe of the pocket monsters and will likely take over as the new standard in competitive Pokémon.
