At the Game Developers Conference in early 2023, Epic Games announced Fab as a unified 3D marketplace for the various Epic stores.

Epic operates asset stores under the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab Store, Quixel, and ArtStation Marketplace. After at least one delay and over a year of waiting, the all-in-one Fab store is getting ready to launch in mid-October.

Epic’s stated goal with Fab is to be a one-stop shop for developers to buy, sell, and share assets to ease the burden on game developers. With an 88/12 revenue split, Epic hopes to enable developers to build sustainable businesses using Fab.

For Epic, this is about more than just ensuring game developers use Unreal Engine. Using Fab to rebrand their portfolio of stores, they hope to bring in creators from other industries, such as architects, designers, fashion creators, and more. From Fab’s launch until the end of 2024, all sales earn 100% revenue for their publishers on Fab Standard-licensed products.

As a wholesale replacement of the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Epic is looking to both carry over everything to Fab and then expand it. Things like AI transparency, which let sellers decide whether their products can be used to train generative AI programs, have long been requested on the asset store and are fully implemented in Fab.

While the launch is intended for mid-October, Epic wants those interested to pay attention to the Epic Developer Community for all other updates.
