Crystalfall, an upcoming free online steampunk action RPG from Swedish developer CRG Studio, is set to enter Early Access on Steam in March 2026, the studio announced today. Ahead of that launch, the game will also be playable during Steam Next Fest, with a demo running from February 23 through March 2.
Inspired by classic action RPGs such as Diablo and Path of Exile, Crystalfall is set in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world shattered by a mysterious asteroid impact. Players take on the role of mutants exploring dangerous dungeons, scavenging crystal shards, and hunting for legendary loot in a game built around long-term progression and deep endgame systems.
The Steam Next Fest demo will feature the game’s first campaign act, offering players an early look at its combat, progression systems, and itemization. Shortly after the festival ends, Crystalfall will move into Early Access as a fully free-to-play title on Steam.
At its core, Crystalfall is designed around player experimentation. The game features a large talent tree, loot-driven progression, and procedural systems that encourage constant build iteration. One of its more distinctive mechanics is that skills themselves are lootable items, each coming with its own procedural skill tree.
These skills can be further modified through rarity upgrades and socketable items called Skill Crests, allowing players to fine-tune how abilities function. Equipment adds another layer of depth through alpha and omega affixes, which modify base item properties and create complex interactions between gear, skills, and passives.
CRG Studio is positioning Crystalfall as an accessible but deep ARPG, aiming to balance an approachable entry point with the kind of mechanical complexity favored by hardcore genre fans.
Rather than locking players into rigid archetypes, Crystalfall uses a largely classless character system. Players are free to shape their playstyle around their chosen weapons, skills, and gear synergies, whether that means combining pistols and shields, dual-wielding steampunk staffs, or experimenting with hybrid setups.
At the start of Early Access, the game will include three classes, five campaign acts, early-stage endgame content, and in-game trading, with localization support for 11 languages. CRG Studio has said it plans to expand those systems over time as development continues through Early Access.
Strong early interest on Steam
The studio is also leaning into community engagement ahead of launch. In partnership with PlayPark, which will publish the game in Southeast Asia, CRG Studio is running a community reward campaign tied to Early Access. Players who pre-register their email and wishlist Crystalfall on Steam can unlock exclusive LAVA-themed cosmetic items at launch.

According to CRG Studio, Crystalfall has already surpassed 60,000 wishlists on Steam, signaling strong early interest from ARPG fans looking for a new free-to-play experience rooted in old-school design principles.
The development team was founded in 2021 by ARPG enthusiasts Åke André and Daniil Sanders in northern Sweden, later joined by Erik Olofsson, former creative director at Grinding Gear Games. Collectively, the team has experience on titles such as Path of Exile, Pillars of Eternity, and Magicka 2.
