A16z speedrun opens applications for fifth event, offers $1M investment

A16z Speedrun announced that its opening applications for its upcoming event, SR005, the fifth edition of its signature event. The 12-week startup speedrunning program begins on July 28 in Los Angeles, with a16z planning to invest up to $1 million into each company selected to participate. The event culminates in Demo Day, held on October 7 during SF Tech Week. Applications for the program close on May 11.

Speedrun’s participants usually include those in the AI and interactive spaces, and their projects can include tools, experiences, games and entertainment. According to a16z, less than 1% of applicants will secure a spot, but those who do will gain not only the monetary investment from a16z but personalized feedback from the team and a network of other industry mentors, advisors and alumni of the program. The company also reports it has deployed over $100 million to 120+ startups since 2023.

Josh Lu, Principal at a16z, said in a statement, “Speedrun is designed for founders who aren’t just following trends—they’re defining them. We’re backing some of the most ambitious entrepreneurs building AI-first products, next-gen entertainment, and entirely new interactive experiences. Our goal is to provide more than just capital; we’re creating a launchpad where founders receive access to a16z’s deep networks, hands-on mentorship, and most importantly a community of ambitious builders that accelerates their success.”

A16z provided details on the previous cohort of SR004, which featured 42 companies from over 6,000 applicants. 69% of those selected were AI-native across multiple verticals, including commerce, development and storytelling. The cohort also featured founders from multiple countries, including Canada, Israel, Turkey, London and Sweden.
