E-sports is a growing industry that’s worth a lot of money, and a new company that wants that market’s attention has a pretty good idea about how to advertise itself: hold its own tournament.
AlphaDraft is planning a League of Legends tournament that will launch April 14 and have a prize pool worth $12,500. The company will invite 10 teams to participate in the competition, which will not count toward the League Championship Series — although it is an approved Riot event.
As e-sports games like League of Legends grow into larger and larger attractions, AlphaDraft is one of the first companies that is trying to establish a business by enabling fans to play daily fantasy sports with their favorite pro gamers. Just like FanDuel, AlphaDraft is a site where you can participate in quick competitions by putting together a team of your favorite League of Legends players. Unlike traditional fantasy sports, AlphaDraft’s season only lasts for a day. So if you lose, you can start again fresh the following day.
AlphaDraft is about to launch the 2.0 version of its website, and that’s what this tournament is meant to bring attention to.
The biggest change that is coming to AlphaDraft is support for a new game. Up until this point, AlphaDraft had only run competitions based on League of Legends. Now, as this update rolls out next week, the site will start running matches for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
This update will also enable AlphaDraft top set up tournaments and matches on its site for any game it chooses.
