Hypertune brings automated overclocking to PC gamers with Intel’s support | exclusive

Hypertune wants to bring overclocking to the masses.

Today, Sept. 8, the Miami-based gaming tech company announced the public release of its Gaming Performance Engineering platform, an automated overclocking tool intended to help gamers safely get more performance out of their gaming computers without risking damaging their devices. In internal testing, the product has resulted in frame-per-second performance improvements of up to 60 percent, according to numbers shared with GamesBeat by a Hypertune representative. 

Hypertune is a subsidiary of Compready, a PC gaming optimization company co-founded by Thomas Schappy and Austin Copeland. Copeland, a former competitive gamer who previously worked as a coach for the esports organization TSM, said in an interview with GamesBeat that Compready’s “three decades of experience in manually tuning systems and understanding the intricacies of the hardware” had informed his company’s development of its safe, third-party auto-overclocking tool. To refine its overclocking technology, Hypertune worked with Pieter “SkatterBencher” Plaisier, a prominent overclocker and expert on Intel performance tuning.

“Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours exploring how to extract the best performance from PC hardware without compromising stability or longevity,” Plaisier said in a press release. “Partnering with Hypertune has allowed us to translate that experience into an intelligent platform that helps gamers achieve meaningful performance gains safely and consistently.”

Copeland credited his company’s ongoing collaboration with Intel for enabling the development of Hypertune’s performance software. Hypertune was built directly on Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility software developer kit, following “close collaboration” between Hypertune and Intel, according to Intel senior principal engineer Dan Ragland in a press release. 

“Intel was like, ‘we want to reserve the ability to only do this ourselves, for users. We don’t want to offer this publicly, from a software perspective,’” Copeland said. “And it took a lot of convincing and a lot of us showing to them that we can be an amazing partner to them, in terms of building awareness and education.”

Today’s official public release of Hypertune’s performance platform, as well as the tool’s official endorsement by Intel, follows an extended early-access period that included an eight-month open beta including over 60,000 participants across devices and skill levels, including top-level pro gamers like Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek. The company monetizes its software through a monthly subscription fee of $9.99, with users able to score a discount by springing for a yearly plan. 

“Especially as hardware is so expensive, we look at our tool as a way to offset all of that cost,” Copeland said. “RAM prices are surging; you could not go get a GPU that’s a 5090 or 5080 for anything reasonable. So, how do you get more frames? How do you get lower latency? How do you get performance that isn’t a super-expensive hardware upgrade? We’re trying to make ourselves as affordable as possible.”

Moving forward, Copeland said he envisions a future in which overclocking products like Hypertune’s platform are a standard element of gamers’ toolkit, much like anti-virus software or GPU control panels. Beyond today’s launch with Intel, Copeland noted that Hypertune’s platform currently supports “every single hardware configuration on the market currently,” including AMD and Nvidia. 

“Hardware companies want to help with this accessibility thing; that’s why they’re supporting me,” Copeland said. “They’ve just stepped up tremendously for us.”
