Rumor: Call of Duty to return to World War II

Call of Duty is apparently returning to the familiar battleground of World War II in 2017, according to a leak.

The move comes after a disappointing outcome for the science fiction version of the game, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which pushed boundaries but didn’t sell as well as previous versions of the annual series.

The leak was first reported in a video on TheFamilyVideoGamers, a YouTube channel that said the details were emailed by an anonymous source.

Activision has said that the game is returning to its traditional roots. But beyond that, the publisher hasn’t revealed anything. This year, Sledgehammer Games, the developer of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, is up for creating the next installment of Call of Duty. That means Sledgehammer will be the studio making the game for this fall.

Activision has three studios — including Treyarch and Infinity Ward — that rotate the duty of shipping a Call of Duty game each year. Each studio is independent and can run a different theme, like science fiction or historical, if it decides to do so.

We’ve asked Activision for a comment and will update once we know more.
