Zombie Studios shows off its Unreal Engine 4 title Daylight running on PlayStation 4

New, more-powerful consoles means developers can make scarier horror games.

Developer Zombie Studios is currently working on a next-gen fright-fest called Daylight for PlayStation 4 and PC, and the company is showing off what it looks like on Sony’s next-gen hardware. Daylight has players slowly creeping through an abandoned hospital with a smartphone and not much else while ghouls and other spirits jump out and try to make you crap your pants.

The survival-horror game is due out in “early 2014,” according to publisher Atlus.

Daylight is one of the first games to utilize Epic Games‘ Unreal Engine 4. UE4 is the next-gen suite of graphics tools from the company that made Gears of War. Epic’s previous engine was the extremely popular Unreal Engine 3, which powered numerous titles on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 over the last several years. Big-name releases that use UE3 include XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Mass Effect, and BioShock Infinite.

Epic is hoping to capture the same kind of foothold on third-party development with UE4 on next-gen consoles as it did with UE3 on the last gen. The company faces competition from Unity Technologies, which has its own 3D graphics engine that is proving popular with developers of all sizes.
