Roblox is going all-in on novel games with an effort that involves stakeholders across the company and its user-generated platform.
Roblox signaled its prioritization of so-called novel games in March 2026, when the company launched Incubator and Jumpstart programs intended to support the development of games with unique genres, gameplay mechanics, and visual styles. Six months later, the results of this push were evident at Roblox Developers Conference, Roblox’s annual conference for developers in its creator ecosystem, which took place in San Jose, California, between Sept. 10-12. Roblox covered GamesBeat’s travel and lodging costs to attend RDC 2026.
“Specifically, in this moment, when I think about novel games, and the kind of games we’re looking for — RPGs, strategy games, shooter games — and when you think about the fidelity and the way things look, I want games that cover the entire spectrum,” said Roblox chief creator ecosystem officer Vlad Loktev in a briefing with members of the press at RDC 2026.
The majority of RDC 2026’s keynote presentation on Sept. 11 focused on technical advances made by the platform over the past year, with a particular focus on tools that would allow creators to build high-fidelity games, like Roblox Reality, which uses AI to automatically generate photorealistic graphics over gameplay bones designed using Roblox’s engine.
In addition to enabling creators to build using more detailed visual styles, Roblox is also expanding in the other direction to make it easier for creators to develop two-dimensional games on its platform. The company has updated Roblox’s engine capabilities with 2D-focused features like a new orthographic camera, direct sprite-sheet import, and animated image containers, with Roblox senior vice president Nick Tornow demonstrating the new features using a Candy-Crush-esque match-three game during the keynote presentation.
Roblox has also introduced new tools intended to help creators iterate faster on new concepts and game ideas, including Build, an AI tool that allows creators to quickly design new games using written prompts, as well as new terrain tools intended to speed up the relatively time-consuming process of designing games’ virtual environments.
“We’re really going to be taking advantage of fast iteration and working on games a little bit quicker,” said Mary Rukavina, the director of creativity at the Roblox studio Twin Atlas, in an interview with GamesBeat.
Among the slew of technical changes and new tools announced at RDC 2026, developers at the event were particularly excited about the terrain updates. Instead of primarily being a voxel-sculpting workflow, Roblox’s terrain generation system is moving toward a more procedural, art-directable process that allows creators to rapidly define paths with splines and shape landscapes as cohesive images rather than manually constructing each element of a game’s terrain.
GamesBeat spoke with three developers at RDC 2026 who flagged Roblox’s terrain updates as a change that would allow them to get more creative in their upcoming projects. Noah “PoptartNoahh” Enyart, whose studio Sable Digital developed the Roblox shooter game TTK Testing, said the updated terrain tools would help his team widen the scale of combat in the game.
“There’s just some hacky stuff that environment artists do in Roblox to get things to look pretty, and this is less hackiness — this is more first-party,” Enyart said in an interview with GamesBeat. “Finally, the terrain will probably have shadows in the distance. We’ll have crisper ridgelines. That’s what I really like to see.”
At RDC 2026, Roblox hosted a panel discussion about growing and retaining 18-plus players on Roblox featuring game makers from traditional studio backgrounds, The panel’s introduction, which featured moderators Jim Greer, Roblox’s senior director of game solutions, and Ceren Ates, a director of Roblox’s creator ecosystem and novel games, made it clear that novel games were the true focus of the session.
“Between the two of us, we spend most of our time working with developers who would like to get on this adventure with us to build novel games,” Ates said during the panel discussion.
Roblox’s push to bring more novel games to its platform is related to the platform’s ongoing effort to invite more game developers from triple-A backgrounds to dip their toes into making and publishing games on Roblox. But Roblox is encouraging creators across its ecosystem, not just developers with triple-A experience, to build novel games. The platform is recognizing the importance of keeping player numbers up, particularly as investors scrutinize Roblox’s declining peak player counts — and novel games, which can bring in new and older audiences, provide a pathway to this continued growth.
“Ultimately, we want to serve every kind of player out there in the world,” Loktev said during the press briefing. “In order to serve every kind of player and all forms of entertainment, you need a wide corpus of many different genres.”
