The Dreamcast is officially a teenager. It is old enough to legally drink in many irresponsible countries. (I’m looking at you, Ukraine.)
On September 9, 1999 (9.9.99), Sega released its last home gaming system in North America. The Dreamcast was ahead of its time in many ways. It had a built-in modem for playing titles like Phantasy Star Online over the Internet. It also featured the first console game, Alien Front Online, with online voice chat and downloadable content. The lineup of Soul Calibur, Hydro Thunder, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, and Marvel vs. Capcom is one of the most critically acclaimed library of games to accompany a system at its launch.
Unfortunately, Sega couldn’t figure out how to maintain that momentum, and by the time the PlayStation 2 came on the scene, most gamers had already skipped over the Dreamcast.
Today, a lot of people still think really highly of the system. Some of them spend their time building insane custom cases for their beloved console. We figured a good way to celebrate the system’s birthday would be to look at the amazing fan-made portable versions of the Dreamcast.
