Roblox and Universal Music Group are officially teaming up.

Today, December 19, Roblox and Universal Music Group (UMG) announced a new strategic partnership intended to help expand integration opportunities for popular music inside both fan-made and artist-licensed Roblox experiences. As part of the deal, the two companies will collaborate to make it easier for artists and labels to navigate the platform, with Roblox providing creative and operational support to UMG artists, as well as access to new Roblox tools and features in beta testing.

“UMG’s strategic relationship with Roblox is built on shared objectives of promoting innovation, empowering artists and deepening fan engagement,” said UMG executive vice president and chief digital officer Michael Nash in a press release. “With this new framework, we are strengthening our commercial, creative and operational collaboration and unlocking new opportunities for our artists and labels.”

Over the coming months, UMG plans to release a series of artist activations on Roblox, including a Stray Kids experience that launched on December 18. The company has already been deeply involved in Roblox activations for the last few years, having launched integrations like “Beat Galaxy,” a dedicated UMG experience on Roblox, and the Boombox, a tool built by the company Styngr that allows experiences to more easily integrate and stream licensed music. Virtual concerts and music activations have been common on Roblox for years, with artists like Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan and Glass Animals recently launching experiences on the platform.

“We have worked closely with Universal Music Group over the years to bring some of their top artists to Roblox to engage with next-gen fans in innovative and creative ways,” said Roblox chief business officer Enrico D’Angelo in a press release. “This strategic agreement represents a major step forward in building the future of immersive entertainment, with this partnership significantly expanding the commercial and creative opportunities for UMG artists and labels on our platform.”

Despite the influx of music into Roblox in recent years, navigating the complexities of music rights within the relatively new medium of user-generated content has been a headache for many rights holders, preventing some musicians from fully diving into the opportunity.

One sticking point for musicians as they wade into the UGC community is a desire to control exactly where and how their music shows up. Artists and rights holders don’t always want to show up next to shooter games or even games with cartoonish violence — and with Roblox fending off criticisms of its perceived child safety issues, artists want to show up in brand-safe environments.

The UMG–Roblox partnership announced today could help encourage more artists to dip their toes into Roblox, giving them the direct operational support they need to feel confident building experiences or integrating into pre-existing popular worlds.

Moving forward, UMG plans to launch a flagship Roblox experience, “Tastemaker,” in the near future, although the company did not share a specific release date.

“This agreement ensures that UMG continues to lead the industry in shaping the future of music in immersive environments,” Nash said in the press release.
