New York City is getting its own citywide festival of video games.
New York City will host its first citywide celebration of the video game industry this fall, with New York Games Week bringing more than 25 events, showcases, and conferences to all five boroughs from October 4-11.
The inaugural event partners with established organizations already operating in the city’s gaming scene, according to a press release. Confirmed programming includes New York Comic Con, which draws more than 250,000 attendees as the East Coast’s largest pop culture convention, along with the independent showcase Game-A-Palooza, the first in-person Fashion in Gaming Awards, and a joint event from Women in Games and Game Devs of Color. VGAmateurs will open the week with a two-hour digital showcase streamed live on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok, spotlighting developer trailers, reveals, and short interviews.
Unlike a traditional trade show, New York Games Week has no central venue or single ticket. Independent organizations — studios, schools, nonprofits, and industry groups — will run their own events under the New York Games Week banner, with a central calendar at makegames.nyc tying the schedule together. Admission policies vary by event, with some free and open to the public and others requiring registration or a separate ticket. Organizers say more events will be announced in the coming weeks, with the current lineup representing an early slate rather than a finished program.
The week is organized by three veterans of the city’s gaming and events scene: Guy Blomberg of Games Industry Gathering, Krysti Pryde of PlayNYC, and Amit Hossain of IGDA NYC. The organizers frame the event as a response to New York’s already substantial gaming footprint, pointing to the city’s studios, universities, and independent developer community as justification for a dedicated citywide week. Programming is designed to span the industry’s full range, from B2B conferences for developers, publishers, and investors to academic showcases from New York’s game design programs, public play events, student competitions, and social gatherings exploring the intersection of games with fashion, art, music, and film.
The event has backing from New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. Commissioner Rafael Espinal framed the effort as recognition of an industry already contributing significantly to the local economy, saying the city’s gaming sector is “growing at an incredible rate, generating millions in economic activity and supporting thousands of jobs for New Yorkers.”
The New York City Economic Development Corporation is also supporting the initiative. Senior Vice President of Innovation Industries Daria Siegel pointed to the diversity of talent spread across the city’s boroughs as a driving force behind the event, and framed it as a chance to spotlight the developers and students shaping the industry’s future.
New York Games Week joins a growing list of city-backed gaming initiatives, including the NYC Video Game Festival, which brings together K-12 and collegiate esports competitions alongside independent studios; the Made in NY Animation Training Program and MediaMKRS workforce initiatives; and the NYC Summer of Games series, which promotes gaming events across all five boroughs year-round. City officials describe these programs collectively as an effort to build out New York’s pipeline for game development talent, investment, and jobs.
Organizations interested in hosting their own event under the New York Games Week umbrella can apply through the event’s website, with sponsorship opportunities also available.
