PlayStation 4 overtakes PS2 as the U.K.’s fastest-selling Sony console

The PlayStation 2 was a fast seller back in the day, but the PlayStation 4’s doing even better.

Sony has now sold over 2 million PS4 consoles in the U.K., reports MCV. It reached the milestone over the weekend, reaching this mark quicker than Sony managed with the PS2. Worldwide, the PS4 has now sold 22.3 million consoles, and it’s still winning the sales battle with Xbox One this console generation.

With mobile gaming revenue expected to exceed console gaming revenue this year, it’s important for Sony and Microsoft — who’ve both invested heavily in their current hardware platforms — to build and sustain sales momentum.

It’s taken 75 weeks for PS4 to sell 2 million units in the U.K., with half of those sales coming in the last 33 weeks.

“Reaching the milestone of two million PlayStation 4 consoles in the UK in less than 18 months is an achievement we are very proud of,” PlayStation’s U.K. managing director Fergal Gara told MCV.

“To be the best selling [current generation] console in Britain — installing faster even than the PlayStation 2 — is testament to an amazing and constantly improving product, the hard work of our trade partners and the team at PlayStation UK, and most importantly, the passion of the players. I would like to thank every one involved in helping us achieve this landmark.”
