Pearl Abyss is a developer based in Gwacheon, South Korea, best known for its online MMORPG, Black Desert Online. The studio has since announced a follow-up action-adventure game, Crimson Desert, which is planned for launch sometime in 2026. It created its own proprietary engine for its games, and works with a development philosophy to “never compromise on quality.”
Pearl Abyss created its own engine, called the Black Desert Engine, alongside the development of the titular game that began in 2010. Its successor, on which it’s building Crimson Desert, is called the BlackSpace Engine.
A spokesperson for the developer said, “From the beginning, our mission has been to deliver new forms of fun and deep immersion that players around the globe have never experienced before. To achieve this, we strive to ensure the highest quality across every stage of development.
“The driving force behind Pearl Abyss are ‘technological independence’ and ‘creative freedom.’ Since our early days, we have built our own proprietary game engine, establishing unrivaled expertise in graphics, physics simulation, and large-scale open-world design. With a spirit of innovation and challenge, we have pursued projects not just for Korea, but for players worldwide.”
Expanding while maintaining core community
Pearl Abyss says that maintaining communication with players around the world is crucial to building a long-lasting community. In the 11 years that Black Desert Online has been active, the studio hosts events such as the Heidel/Calpheon Ball and Adventurer’s Oasis events, where players can communicate with the development team.
While the studio was founded in Korea, its sphere of influence extends globally, with Pearl Abyss having acquired Icelandic studio CCP Games. However, the studio says that it retains respect for “one of the most dynamic and competitive game markets” in the world, with players expecting a certain level of quality and supporting equal interest in both mobile and PC online gaming.
The spokesperson added, “Korea offers a development environment backed by a world-class talent pool and solid infrastructure. With industries closely interconnected, projects can benefit from a wide range of synergies. At the same time, the fast-paced and dynamic nature of the market makes competition even fiercer, meaning new studios must demonstrate quick execution and clear differentiation to succeed.”
