We’ve all played in the worlds of Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon, but few of us have ever thought about conquering them. If that idea interests you, then you’ll love this unlikely meeting of Nintendo and Risk, the board game of world domination.
A man going simply by “Nintendo Risk” first showed off his creation on Reddit. His custom board uses modified rules from the classic game on a map filled with land masses recognizable to any Nintendo lover, including Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Dinosaur Island from Super Mario World, and Kanto from Pokémon Red and Blue.
Sadly, you won’t get to play Nintendo Risk anytime soon. We reached out to the board’s creator to ask him if he thought of commercializing his product. “I would absolutely love to make Nintendo Risk a real thing and to share it with my fellow gamers,” Nintendo Risk told GamesBeat. “Working for Nintendo has been a fantasy that took me down a career path in IT/programming and has basically shaped my entire adult life, so I can’t even express how much I would love working with them on this project. That’s one of the reasons I’m so gung ho about crossing any legal lines by uploading imagery. I don’t want to burn bridges with an entity that I’ve never even approached.
“That said, it’s a very daunting task to try and make this ‘official.’ It takes a lot of money to launch a project like this, and while I’d be willing to take a financial risk, everything hinges on Nintendo willing to license me characters and settings from eight different franchises. If Nintendo says no, all I’ll have done is dug myself in a hole of debt. If all it took were hard work and dedication, I’d take out a loan in a heartbeat, but I can’t guarantee that Nintendo will cooperate. My odds of success seem even less likely when you consider that I’d have to license the Risk franchise, as well.”
It’s unfortunate since his unique take on the classic game looks like incredible fun. But for now, all we can do is stare at the beautiful creation, which you can see up close in the gallery below.
