Mattel continues its charm offensive with the Masters of the Universe franchise, this time by bringing it to an official island in Fortnite. He-Man, Teela and several other residents of Eternia — as well as Eternia itself — have joined the island Masters of the Universe: He-Man Heroes, which launched today in early access.
Users who visit the island gather together the heroes (and some villains) from the franchise to battle through hordes of enemies. In doing so, they collect Shards of Eternia, which can then be used to summon more heroes and building out their team of up to four characters. They can boost their power with more Shards and take on more challenges.
Ron Friedman, VP of Mattel Future Lab, said in a statement, “He-Man has always stood for power, heroism, and imaginative adventure. Masters of the Universe: He-Man Heroes brings Eternia to Fortnite in a fresh way that is easy to jump into, but has plenty of strategy for those who want to dig deeper, creating an experience that’s fun, fast, and unmistakably He-Man. This launch expands Mattel’s presence to one of today’s most dynamic and influential gaming platforms, using interactive storytelling to build community and enjoy Masters of the Universe as never before.”
Mattel has made an effort to get the Masters of the Universe back into the public eye recently. A live-action He-Man film is currently in the works, with Travis Knight directing and Nicholas Galitzine playing Prince Adam. The company also recently launched a digital card game for mobile starring the MotU characters called Battle for Eternia. The franchise as a whole also got a recent popularity boost thanks to the animated He-Man reboot and the Netflix show She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (She-Ra is a Dreamworks property, so she’s not likely to be a property with her twin brother anytime soon, though).
