Mattel and Gambit Games today announced an upcoming digital card game for one of the former’s most legendary franchises: Masters of the Universe, the world of He-Man and company. The game, called Battle for Eternia, is set to launch later this year for iOS and Android, with PC gamers getting the power of Grayskull at some point in the future.
The trailer shows several of the characters who will appear as cards in the game, including Prince Adam himself, Teela, Man-at Arms, Orko, big bad Skeletor and several others. The character cards — which appear to feature original art of the MOTU characters — combine with battle cards as two players duke it out on Eternian battlefields, including the iconic Snake Mountain.
Ben Topkins, Gambit Games CEO, told GamesBeat in a statement, “Our team grew up captivated by the adventures of He-Man, Skeletor and all the Masters of the Universe. So bringing Eternia to life in this game is really a childhood dream come true. The IP is such a perfect fit for a card game, as we can bring in hundreds of characters, artifacts and locations that MOTU fans know and love. MOTU has a unique and dedicated fanbase and we hope they’ll be excited by what we’ve created as well.”
Mattel has been slowly reviving the MOTU characters in recent years, with a live-action movie from Amazon planned for release next year. Erika Winterholler, Mattel’s head of business development in digital games, added: “With Battle for Eternia, we’re bringing the nostalgia and epic battles of Masters of the Universe to both longtime fans and digital card game fanatics everywhere. This is a new opportunity for all to reconnect with the iconic heroes and villains of the franchise, while experiencing bold strategies, fast-paced battles, and the magic of Eternia in a whole new format through digital cards.”
