Lionsgate’s gaming division has a hell of a good day with Power Rangers launch

Lionsgate is a movie and TV studio known for films like Twilight and The Hunger Games. But now it’s also getting a reputation in games. And today, the company had a “helluva good day,” according to game chief Peter Levin.

Today, the company and its partners released Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, a mobile game based on the Power Rangers franchise that gets a film reboot on Friday. On top of that, the company has three out of the five featured slots on Google Play, including Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, Family Guy’s stunt quest with the Power Rangers, and Next Games’ The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land.

“This is a huge days for us,” Levin said in an interview with GamesBeat. “It’s a validation of a lot of work.”

And Next Games, which both Levin and Lionsgate own a stake, went public today on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. The stock price rose 20 percent in the first day of trading. Besides The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land game, Next Games shares rose to 7.90 euros. The company raised 32.8 million euros, or $35.3 million, and its  market value is $154 million.

Lastly, Mario Lopez has been named the host of CBS’ Candy Crush television game show, based on the popular game from King. Candy Crush is being produced by Pulse Creative in association with Lionsgate, King, and CBS. The first episode airs on July 9.

“As a player, I am excited to step into the real life Candy Crush Arena” said Lopez, in a statement.

In the mobile game Candy Crush Saga, players match colorful candies in combinations of three or more to win points, defeat obstacles and progress through more than 2,000 levels. Candy Crush Saga and its sister title, Candy Crush Soda Saga, are two of the top 10 grossing mobile games in the U.S. On average, 18 billion game rounds of Candy Crush Saga are played every month around the world.

March has been a good month in general for Lionsgate, which has also announced a Reservoir Dogs game for PC and Xbox One with Big Star Games.
