Mojang, the creators of Minecraft, have just recently announced their new game called Scrolls. Its going to be a card-game + board game with RPG elements.
Something that has to be stated right off the bat is that this game is NOTHING like Minecraft. So, don’t even try to make the comparison. In fact, throw it out the window and keep an open mind to this because it could be interesting.
The game is initially set in a fantasy world and players will be able choose between some starter decks. If the player would like more cards, they will have to buy more packs of cards. I do not know if it will be done with micro transactions or with in-game currency. They want to make sure that the essence of card games were still there. It sounds like the main focus will be on the your cards and the effects. Mojang wants to make sure that the point across that pouring money into the game is not going to get you easy wins. One thing that Mojang wants to make sure though is that the board game aspect is not played down.
The game board is dynamic. The players will need to use the game board to find advantages to defeat the opponent. Here is a quote from Jacob Porser and Carl Manneh talking about the game board.”Maybe I have an imp, and I want to place him , but the board is busy and my opponent has cast spells that prevent me from placing units in certain areas. The game board is dynamic. You need to manage your units constantly, working on how to protect them, heal them, shield them. This will b an almost roleplaying element. You give creatures items, for instance. So maybe you invest heavily in a unit, give it a sword, you want to keep it alive. You’ll want to make more long-term strategic choices in game.” (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)
Mojang is planning to have a closed alpha, but an open beta. so keep on the look out. If you would like to read more about it, check out the Rock, Paper, Shotgun interview with the fellas at Mojang.
