Destiny The Dark Below

Destiny’s next expansion will cost $40, according to rumor

Publisher Activision’s big sci-fi shooter franchise Destiny won’t get a sequel released a year after the original, but that doesn’t mean the company won’t have a way to squeeze a lot more money from fans.

The next expansion, which is reportedly called The Taken King, will launch Sept. 15 for $40, according to leaked promotional material on Kotaku. That is two-thirds the cost of a full new release. That price is emblematic of how Activision and developer Bungie are planning to keep the game’s revenues at a high enough level to justify missing a year with a retail sequel. Activision is one of the publishers that established the annual-release cycle with franchises like Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, and Skylanders — but it is obviously looking for an alternative to that rapid release schedule when it comes to Destiny.
