Destiny servers down intermittently — Bungie’s blockbuster shooter experiencing connection errors

While a huge number of players are online playing Destiny right now, many have reported trouble connecting to the sci-fi shooter since it launched.

Destiny debuted last night at midnight, and it has since suffered a number of intermittent connection errors. Many of these have made the servers completely unavailable while others have kicked players offline in the middle of their game. The latter problem often causes players to lose progress. Leading up to its launch, the shooter became one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Gamer turnout for Destiny combined with the fact that it requires an online connection to work likely means that Bungie’s online infrastructure is handling a massive amount of traffic.

Destiny’s servers are doing an admirable job keeping up with that crushing demand, but that’s not preventing a handful of problems. Some gamers are reporting getting stuck on loading screens, while others get online with the game only to get the following error message after playing for a while:

Destiny's server error has caused trouble for a handful of players.

If you find yourself having problems getting into or staying connected to Destiny, Bungie did tweet some advice:

Earlier this year, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz predicted that Destiny will outsell every other game this year. Yesterday, publisher Activision came out and confirmed that the shooter had more preorders than any other franchise debut ever. So it’s not surprising that the network is dealing with a lot in its first 24 hours.
