Pearl Abyss has released Patch 1.04 for Crimson Desert, a massive update introducing a broad range of gameplay enhancements, expanded systems, and quality-of-life improvements.

Crimson Desert has been a huge success, but the game had somewhat of a controversial launch, with reviewers being split on what to make of it. One thing many agreed on was that the game needed various improvements to reach its full potential, and since then, Pearl Abyss has been hard at work implementing these changes. Crimson Desert has sold more than five million copies since its March 19 launch.

Patch 1.04 represents Crimson Desert’s biggest update to date and adds a slate of new options and changes that many players will benefit from. Here’s a full rundown of what’s been added:

New Difficulty Settings: Players can now choose between Easy, Normal, and Hard modes, with Normal matching the original difficulty. Hard mode introduces increased enemy strength, new boss patterns, and tighter parrying and dodging windows.

New Character Skills: New skills have been added for key characters, with improvements to certain attack flows.

Housing & Storage System Improvements: Multiple selectable layouts and improved housing controls, including bulk furniture retrieval, streamline home management. New storage options also let players access stored items directly during crafting or cooking without needing them in their inventory.

Controls, UI, and Accessibility Improvements: Control presets are now available for both keyboard/mouse and controllers. UI updates include inventory category tabs, improved map tools, and clearer shop and quest interfaces, along with new accessibility options such as a colorblind mode.

Technical & Visual Enhancements: Enhanced rendering of distant environments, improved lighting and textures, and better character detail at range. Platform-specific optimizations across PC, console, and Mac bring stability improvements and numerous bug fixes throughout.

Additionally, Pearl Abyss plans to release Volume 1 of the Crimson Desert OST, featuring 75 tracks, in the very near future as free DLC on Steam and the Epic Games Store, on major streaming platforms, and on the Pearl Abyss Music YouTube channel.

Crimson Desert may not be every gamer’s cup of tea, and situations like this continue to feed the debate about games needing more work after release, and whether that is an acceptable state of affairs.

However, many of the players who bought the ambitious title will be relieved to see a development team working to support their product and listening to feedback from players and pundits alike.

Patch 1.04 is unlikely to be Crimson Desert’s final patch, but so far, each update has objectively improved the experience significantly.
