Director Peter Jackson is in the middle of making a trilogy of films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, and publisher Warner Bros. is taking that opportunity to work with TT Games on a new Lego game based on the franchise.
Developer TT Games, which is responsible for the popular Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman games (among others), is now producing Lego The Hobbit. This follows Bilbo Baggins through the events of the first two films. The game is due out in 2014 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PlayStation Vita, 3DS, PC, and Mac.
“We are thrilled to depict the characters and environments of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth in Lego form with the Lego The Hobbit video game,” TT Games managing director Tom Stone said in a statement. “Our family-friendly take on these thrilling adventures will have kids and parents playing and laughing together as they build and explore in Lego Middle-earth.”
Of course, players aren’t stuck only playing the diminutive Hobbit. As in other Lego games, The Hobbit has scores of other characters to unlock, including Gandalf the wizard and Bilbo’s dwarf companions. It also has famous Middle-earth locations like Bag End, The Misty Mountains, Goblin-town, Mirkwood, and Rivendell.
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug is due out in theaters Dec. 13. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is available now on Blu-ray and DVD.
