Nintendo announces Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon for 3DS

You know Nintendo is getting serious when it throws the word “super” into a title.

The Japanese gaming company announced Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, a new release in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, itself a spin-off of the main Pokémon franchise. It will come out for the 3DS portable this winter.

The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series started back in 2005 for the DS and Game Boy Advance. It has players control Pokémon through randomly generated dungeons in a gameplay style called a rougelike, named after the 1980 game Rogue that invented the genre. According to Nintendo, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide.

We’ll likely see more of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon at next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
