CCP Games expands Eve Online's universe again with virtual reality space sim Eve: Valkyrie

CCP Games, the maker of sci-fi massively multiplayer online games, announced today it is making Eve: Valkyrie, a multiplayer spaceship-dogfighting shooter set in the Eve Online universe. The game uses virtual reality to give players the sense of being a real pilot in an Eve Online spaceship.

Valkryie carries a 2014 release date. Iceland-based CCP showed it at the Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany.

Eve: Valkyrie is the evolution of Eve-VR, a virtual reality tech demo that debuted at Eve Fanfest 2013 and won numerous awards at the E3 trade show. CCP’s Newcastle, England, studio is making the game. It looks very ambitious and it shows how PC games are likely to evolve as console games move into the next generation. The release doesn’t mention Oculus VR, the virtual reality pioneer that makes the Oculus VR virtual reality goggles. But it seems likely it will use that platform.

“From the moment this year’s Fanfest attendees first got their hands on EVE-VR, the question has been, ‘When can I have this?’” said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, the CEO of CCP, in a statement. “What started as a passion project by a small, incredibly talented group of CCP developers became one of the most highly anticipated games of the year — before we even announced it. We have big plans for EVE: Valkyrie and I can’t wait to share more details later this year.”
