Reviews Spotlight: Spring Training Is Over

Welcome to the start of baseball season…and this week's Reviews Spotlight! Not unlike America's so-called "favorite pastime" (we all know that football supplanted baseball years ago as the nation's favorite sport), some of the games in this Spotlight are rookies, and others have been on the bench for awhile. Also, unlike a game featuring the hapless Washington Nationals, these reviews are well worth the wait.

Carlos Macias gives us his cheerful opinion on the reimagining of Red Steel 2's story and its use of the Wii's Motion Plus attachment. Has Ubisoft gone beyond the "frantic waving of arms" strategy that some titles using Nintendo's new accessory utilize? Scroll down to find out.

Ariel Feist gives us some straight talk about the conclusion of the PlayStation 3's God of War saga — does Kratos still got what it takes?

BioShock 2 has received criticism for not being as good as its predecessor. Patrick Cavasar lets us know if 2K is still the big daddy in terms of story and gameplay.

Toss in a so-so opinion of Borderlands from Daniel Feit and Ryan Conway's For What it's Worth series starring Mega Man ZX: Advent and both Wii Sports titles, and you've got yourself enough entertainment to last until the seventh-inning stretch.

Let's play ball!

The Science of Move and Red Steel 2
By Carlos Macias
The first Red Steel was a launch title for the Wii. Some say it tried too hard to do what the other big boys in the market were doing, and it was met with mixed reviews (though gamers bought over a million copies worldwide). For the sequel, Ubisoft went back to the drawing board in terms of visuals, story, and gameplay — especially when it comes to making best use of Wii Motion Plus. Is it enough to win over Carlos's heart?

From the Bakemono's Mouth: God of War 3 Review
By Ariel Feist
No one denies God of War 3 is a monster of a game (and not just in terms of hype). Between all of the minotaurs, gorgons, and plain-old soldiers you have to stomp, does it have any room left for the stellar "gods vs. titans" story the fans of this series are used to enjoying? Ariel says yes and no.

BioShock 2 Review
By Patrick Cavasar
Patrick focuses more on the many gameplay enhancements and weapons upgrades this BioShock sequel has to offer. He's also quick to point out this entry in the story of Rapture is much more difficult than its predecessor, and it also has a rather fun multiplayer mode.

The Final Cut–Borderlands
By Daniel Feit
Daniel says Borderlands is a curious beast. You might say the same thing about him when you read that he thinks the game is boring and focuses too much on violence and not enough on characters and story — and yet he just hit level 50 and can't put the game down. Read on to find out what makes this less-than-exciting title so hard for him to resist.

For What It's Worth: Mega Man ZX: Advent
By Ryan Conway

If you're not familiar with Ryan's For What it's Worth series, he basically tells you if a bargain title is worth your allowance money or not. In the case of Mega Man ZX: Advent, the game continues the Zero series and story, has some fun gameplay any fans of Mega Man will find familiar, and offers a surprising change in music and extra features. Read on to see if this is enough to make the $20 price worth your while.

For What It's Worth: Wii Sports doubleheader
By Ryan Conway
For Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, Ryan goes against his normal scoring system and sticks to the "are they worth my time" part of the review. The graphics, sound, and music are all pretty basic, so it comes down to the use of the Motion Plus accessory and fun when deciding if these titles are for you. Read on to see if waving your arms around in real life puts you in the middle of the virtual-sports action for this Nintendo franchise.
